What You Will Learn:

From the Prosthodontic perspective:

• How do we assess if crown lengthening is a suitable treatment option

• How do we assess the case difficulty

• How do we work up a case for crown lengthening? What are the necessary steps?

• How do we then decide on an appropriate final restoration/prosthodontic treatment option after crown lengthening – are there any critical points we need to be aware of in terms of preparation design or the general workflow?

From a Periodontal Perspective:

• Discussing a case of a gummy smile: When is gingivectomy a suitable treatment option? How do we plan for gingivectomy? What are the clinical steps involved in gingivectomy?

• How do we assess if gingivectomy is suitable or crown lengthening is required

• Discussing a simple case of functional crown lengthening for a patient with heavily restored dentition; what are the clinical steps i volved? Are there any flap designs and suturing techniques we can learn about?

• If the case is then too difficult for a general dentist, how do we manage the case together with a specialist - what do we include in the referral? How do we manage the patient before and after the procedure?

Speakers:

Dr. Hossam El-Haddad

Dr. Hossam: Hossam graduated from Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt) in 2006, and worked in both public and private sectors before relocating to Australia in 2010. Hossam obtained a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 2015, and graduated with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from the University of Melbourne in 2018. His research project centered on the use of novel CAD-CAM materials in full arch implant dentistry, and was published in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants.

Hossam now works at Prosthodontics Plus – a private specialist practice in Moonee Ponds. He enjoys ongoing involvement within the academic field as a lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of Melbourne’s dental school, where he is also the coordinator of the implant component for DDS students and the academic lead of CPD. In collaboration with Melbourne University and the International Team for Implantology (ITI), Hossam delivers CPD programs that educate general dental practitioners on Prosthodontic topics.

He is an active member of the ITI, the Australian Dental Association (ADA), and the Australian Osseointegration Society (AOS). Hossam further serves as a committee member for the Australian Prosthodontic Society (APS), and is currently the Victorian representative within its Federal Committee

Dr. Melinda Newnham BDSc (W.A.) FRACDS DCD (Perio) FRACDS (Perio) FADI :

Melinda completed her undergraduate dental training at the University of Western Australia in 1995, specialist training in periodontics in Melbourne (2006), was awarded the ANZAP medallion in 2007 and gained fellowship to the Academy of Dentistry International in 2017.Melinda has been a periodontist for 15 years working in Moonee Ponds and more recently in Melbourne CBD, is the consultant periodontist at the Alfred Hospital and holds teaching positions at the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University, Bendigo.

Melinda’s particular interests include the periodontal rehabilitation of medically compromised patients, aesthetics and the management of peri-implantitis. In her spare time, Melinda loves catching up with friends for dinner, going to the gym, reading, watching trashy sitcoms and silence at home when her boys are out!
